Since the Viking missions in the 70s many orbiter missions have collected data of the surface, atmosphere and even sub-surface of Mars. The data set acquired by those missions are essential for landing site characterization and selection for future lander missions. Data sets can be found in the Planetary Science Archive (ESA) and in the Planetary Data System (NASA).
